How did I go from being a waiter to becoming the highest paid African male model in Dubai?
In 2017 I moved to Dubai from my home country Cameroon with 2000AED to my name, 20 English words in my vocabulary and a vision to becoming a successful model.
Needless to say, things didn’t immediately work like a charm…
My first months in Dubai were tough, you know, moving to a new country, not knowing anyone and having to learn everything from scratch. It was definitely a struggle.
I didn’t have my own place to stay, so I had to move into what we call a bed space, a room I shared with people I did not know. And when I started running out of money, I took the first job I could and started working as a waiter.
Though this job was miles away from my modeling ambitions, it was a great way to practice my English and add a few more words to my vocabulary
After months of waiting tables, it was time to get back to working on my goal to becoming a professional model.
How on earth do you get started?
The beginning was really hard. I had no connections, didn’t know anyone in the industry, didn’t know which agencies to reach out to; in short, I had no idea where to start.
And once I got started, I made mistakes, listened to the wrong people and received countless rejections (when I was lucky enough to even get an answer to my applications).
I have learned a lot from these early days and started documenting everything I was going through to build my own blueprint.
In 2018 I was on the verge of giving up, I could hear the voice of my mom back home telling me “ Eric why don’t you just get a nice 9-5 office job”. Well, this wasn’t my calling nor my vision! I gave everything I had and shortly after, I secured my first modeling booking
From that moment onwards I knew that I was going to become a professional model. I kept on recording everything I was learning along the way, and started to understand the modeling landscape in Dubai, the main actors, the right agencies to work with, how to negotiate my contracts as well as knowing the type of fees I should expect.
So now what?
As a multiple 6 figure professional, today I have become the highest paid African male model in Dubai. I worked and am still working with some of the biggest brands you know including emirates, adidas, Sony, Sofitel just to name a few. If I’m sharing my story with you, it is not to flex or to show off, it is simply to show you that If I managed to accomplish my goal of becoming a full time professional model in Dubai, you can make it, too!
